Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge - September 2023

Celebrated the fall equinox yesterday by visiting the Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge just outside of Camas, WA. This 1,024-acre refuge borders the Columbia river and is a year-round wetland + floodplain for migrating birds. It was protected in 1987 and funds were directed towards it through an agreement/settlement with the Bonneville dam. Not exactly an equal exchange… Yet, I am still so glad this place exists for all the critters and plants that live out here. Remnant stands of Oregon White Oak grow here but Black Cottonwood mostly dominate in the corridors in the park. Saw a few notable plants like Silene latifolia and Sagittaria latifolia (coincidence how they have the same species name). Now that fall is here, I am not going to see as many wildflowers, but don’t worry I’ll still be posting about natural history related topics!
