This flowering shrub is endemic to western California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. They are commonly found growing in the understory of forests, open meadows, on rocky slopes, riparian areas, and in disturbed habitats (roadsides, clearings) that have well draining soils. Their leaves have slightly toothed margins, indented veins, and are pleasantly fragrant. In the early spring, this deciduous shrub produces vibrant red clusters of flowers that develop into dark blue berries later in the summer. The botanical name sanguineum means ‘blood red’ which describes its bright red flowers. It’s hard to miss them, they really stand out in the dark conifer understory. This shrub is a great native plant to grow in the garden if you want to attract local pollinators like 🦋🐦
