Tigard Public Library Tree Planting

This weekend, I got to organize what’s probably my favorite tree planting in my three years with Friends of Trees! 🌳✨

With the help of over 30 amazing volunteers, we planted 20 large-stock, climate-forward trees at the Tigard Public Library. Working with several local nurseries, we sourced species native to Southern Oregon and California—planning for a future climate that will look a lot different than it does today. As temperatures rise, experts predict Portland’s climate may resemble Santa Rosa, CA (or even Bakersfield in worst-case scenarios) in the next 20-40 years. That’s why it’s more important than ever to plant trees that can thrive in a hotter, drier future.

We planted a mix of species, including Oregon White Oak (Quercus garryana), Blue Oak (Quercus douglasii), Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia), Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa), Incense Cedar (Calocedrus decurrens), Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides), and more! Our goal was to create a savanna-inspired landscape that blends the ecological history of Oregon with forward-thinking climate adaptability.

Big thanks to the Tigard Public Library for embracing this vision. Now, library visitors can learn more about climate-resilient trees, and volunteers can take pride in shaping a landscape that connects people to place in a meaningful way.

Feeling incredibly grateful for everyone who made this project happen. Here's an article to read more about the project: https://friendsoftrees.org/?s=tigard+library
