Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus)
Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus) is a edible native plant of the Pacific Northwest. Its white flowers slowly blend into pink before producing delicious raspberry shaped berries that resemble sewing thimbles. They are found growing in disturbed, open areas like road edges, shorelines, avalanche tracks and usually by red alder trees. They were eaten extensively by all northwest coastal tribes and were usually prepared by drying or in seafood dishes. The fruiting period is very short, maybe a couple of weeks, but if you can find them give them a try they are one of my personal favorites!
