Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge - September 2023
The Siletz wildlife refuge is an incredibly, unique habitat just south of Lincoln City, OR on the coast. This large salt/freshwater estuary is fed by the Siletz river and Drift creek. It is one of six wildlife refuges on the Oregon Coast forming the Oregon Coast national wildlife refuge complex. Until 1920, it was diked for cattle farming, but thanks to the Siletz confederated tribe and USFWS this tidal marsh and estuary has been mostly restored and opened to the public for non-motorized boat travel and some hiking around the Alder Trail and Cutler City Wetland trail. We rented kayaks, waited for the tide to come in, and paddled through a network of rivers and sloughs to see more of this habitat. Some of the most notable species were the Great Egret, Red Legged Frog, Great Blue Heron, Grindelia stricta, and Salicornia pacifica.
